Below is a guest blog by Music Industry student Rachael Schroeder about a hands on example of the Nimbus Ecosystem. On February 7th Audio, Video and Music Industry students came together for a Nimbus Night at The Roxy, utilizing Nimbus’ Mobile Audio and Video Recording truck to record three full sets. Here is Rachael’s take on the night:

Nobody ever thinks of The Roxy as their classroom.
If there is one thing I have learned from being at Nimbus for the past 18 months, it’s that the assignments are never what you would expect from a post-secondary education; when I say that, I mean it in the best way possible. During my time as an audio student one of the more creative assignments was sampling sounds from downtown Vancouver. This included recording paint cans being hit, busses braking, and the ocean hitting up against the docks and and then turning it into music. Now as a business student in the MIND200 class we get to put on shows once a month at The Roxy Cabaret in downtown Vancouver. This assignment includes booking the bands, promoting the show, and even emceeing the event; our first live show assignment was at The Vogue Theatre last semester, how crazy is that? I don’t know of any other school that gives you the opportunity to experience the world and music industry in that way.

Last week my MIND200 class and I put on our February Nimbus Nights show at The Roxy featuring multiple local bands (Raincity Shakes, Princess Kenny, and Sound of the Sun). The business class at Nimbus has been doing this for quite some time; long before my time as a business student. In the past, the LIVE200 students were also part of the Nimbus Nights doing front of house sound, but this was the first show that included some of the audio ENGR/PROD students using the Nimbus Mobile Truck to do a multitrack recording and send a broadcast mix to the VPRO students who did a multi-camera video of each of the sets. All of the ‘houses’ of Nimbus were finally collaborating as one.

Honestly, everything went pretty smoothly. Sure, we took some notes on small things we could improve on for the next show (March 7 at The Roxy, be there) but overall there weren’t any hiccups. We made sure all of the departments were in the loop, all the bands performed exceptionally, and we had a good turn out for a Tuesday night. It was a great experience putting on a larger production and rewarding to be able to give emerging artists/bands not only an opportunity to perform but to also receive a full capture of their performances that they can use to build their own online presence. My class and I are looking forward to improving and growing future Nimbus Nights at The Roxy.
