At Nimbus, our goal is to provide students with the tools to integrate into the music community and deal with all aspects of the industry as best as possible. We also push our students to ‘own their lives’ and to take initiative by getting involved as much as possible outside of the school.

So far this summer, Nimbus students have been doing an amazing job getting out into the local music scene, working for music festivals such as Khatsahlano! Music Festival and Carnival Del Sol. Most recently, several of our Live Sound students Nate Wester, Jana Bagasbas, Audrey Rose and Caleb Hardy took it upon themselves to explore job availability at Pemberton Music Festival. They each were successful in acquiring work and were eager to share their experience from this massive event.

Surrounded by towering mountains and forest, Pemberton Music Festival attracts over 29,000 eager music fans and some of the biggest acts in music today. Acts this year included Kendrick Lamar, The Black Keys, J. Cole, Tiesto, Diplo and Skrillex to name a few. The line-up also included Alice Cooper who was produced by our very own Nimbus cofounder, Bob Ezrin. Nimbus students not only assisted with stage setup, but also VIP relations and artist relations.

Nate Wester worked as VIP concierge for the weekend, hosting the info booth for campers who had purchased VIP access passes. In between shifts Nate was able to see many of the shows while observing how a festival of this size is operated. Nate says this opportunity, ‘opened his eyes to reach his goal to become a front of house tech.’ When we asked how his training at Nimbus so far had helped him do his job over the weekend, Nate explained, “Nimbus helped me acquire the proper people skills to interact with different campers and make sure they were having a good time.”

Jana Bagasbas helped with artist relations and bag check-in over the weekend. She assisted the artists with any questions they had and ensured the security of their bags. This great opportunity allowed Jana to meet many big name artists and the teams that support them while  on tour. Jana explained, “My favourite experience from Pemberton Music Festival was definitely meeting a large number of artists on a much different level than the general public. The artists and their teams put so much into performing and going on tour that I have a new respect for them.”

At Nimbus, all our students are provided classes with registered clinical counsellor, Tamara Adilman. These classes provide students with tools to work with different personalities and situations that can often be found in the music industry. Jana was able to use these tools while dealing with artists over the weekend as she explains, “Being taught in production and live sound to deal with artists sober and under the influence has definitely been a huge thing to keep in mind. I am usually not a sociable person but Tamara taught me so much and I was really happy to apply it.”

Audrey Rose and Caleb Hardy worked with the live sound crew. Their roles included assisting with the setup of stage equipment and working alongside the festival’s sound technicians. They were happy to put their experience from Nimbus into practice at such a big event. Caleb explained that, “it allowed (him) to do his job without blowing anything up or breaking any expensive equipment.” They were able to spend valuable time behind the scenes and observe Nimbus Live Sound instructor Swann Barrat control front of house sound during Dan Mangan’s performance as well as take in many of the performances. Dan Mangan in fact drove up to Pemberton Music festival in the Nimbus Recording van!

We are very proud of our Live Sound student’s hard work and for stepping out and  getting involved with such a high profile event.
