Advanced Music Production Student, Stephanie Hodgins Talks About Music, Community & Following Your Passion

Advanced Music Production student Stephanie Hodgins is taking full advantage of the 24/7 studio time we give all our students. We sat down to chat with Stephanie this week to find out what she’s been up to in the studio and to hear about her Nimbus experience so far. It’s no surprise that she had a lot to fill us in on!

Stephanie, like many of our students, began her musical journey at a young age. She began by first playing piano then learning guitar in her teenage years. “I have always wanted to be a musician,” she says. “But to appease my parents I took the Social Work program at UBC for 6 years. I didn’t end up getting a degree.” Eventually, Stephanie left UBC. “I finally start to take myself seriously as a musician,” she said, “but in order to do that I knew I needed the same skills as everyone else to put me on the same playing field.”

Stephanie explains how before coming to Nimbus her band Animal Atlas recorded with alumnus Dylan Irvine when he was in Production 200. Stephanie says “his enthusiasm with the program gave me the idea to go to Nimbus. He loved it so much that I thought I would probably love it that much too, and I was right.”

In her first semester at Nimbus, while taking Engineering 100, Stephanie recorded a 2 song EP for Tegan Wahlgren aka Wallgrin. The EP was mastered by Nimbus instructor and CPS Mastering head, Brock Macfarlane, and released on bandcamp. You can see Tegan Wahlgren perform live on July 23rd at The Media Club. Listen to the Wallgrin EP now by clicking on the cover art.

While taking Nimbus’ Production 100 course with Garth Futcher (“Futch”), Stephanie recorded a 2 track EP for her band, Coldwater Road. Due to Stephanie’s great efforts along with some help from Gina Loes, lead singer of The Ruffled Feathers, Coldwater Road was successfully awarded a grant from FACTOR Canada to record 2 more songs. The full 4 song EP is scheduled to release in the Fall of 2015 and we are very excited to hear it.

Currently Stephanie is taking the Production 200 course with Shawn Cole (“Doctor Boss”) and recording a 6 track EP with her newest band, Parlour Panther. The band includes players from her previous band, Animal Atlas, as well as Tegan from Wallgrin. Stephanie has been writing songs for the EP with Lee Newman and over the next few months we will be hearing their creations recorded in our studios.

When we asked Stephanie to describe her Nimbus experience so far, this is what she had to say:

“I think it has been amazing.  Nimbus is a special place because it fosters community and creativity and I have felt my creativity stifled a lot in my life.
